Hamilton auction features 1758 Bill of Exchange

A rare French regime Bill of Exchange is to be offered at Jeffrey Hoare Auctions' Jan. 27-29 CAND sale in Hamilton, Ont.
The bill, containing both pre-printed and handwritten text, is dated 1758. The third of three bills, it promises to pay the bearer 800 livres. At that time it was customary to make up three bills of exchange for each transaction, in case one or two were lost at sea or by enemy action. Bills were issued in Canada, but had to be transported to Paris to be redeemed. Only the first such bill to be presented would be honoured. It is likely that the first was redeemed, since it is not known, but the second in the series is in the Bank of Canada collection...
